August 23, 2001 To debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the fourth generation Polo features an all new body structure and appearance, as well as a host of new engines and technological enhancements. The face of the car picks up some influence from the smaller Lupo, with quad round lamps.
On sale in Europe early next year, the new Polo will be available at launch in three and five-door bodystyles, and with a choice of five engines two petrol and three diesel.
The new Polo is 154 mm longer than the current generation, with the wheelbase extended by 53 mm. As such, the new Volkswagen meets all the needs both of a family car and a quality urban car.
A large range of optional equipment will enhance comfort and safety: in conjunction with the electronic stability program (ESP), Volkswagen is offering a hydraulic brake assistant (HBA), designed to cut emergency braking distance. Other options will include Climatic, a semi-automatic air conditioning system which uses less fuel than a conventional system and integrated rear child seats.
