October 17, 2001 Nissan displayed the mm-e concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month, and at the press conference there Mr. Ghosn, President and COO, said "this is the first step to create the next generation Micra".
The mm, to be unveiled at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show, represents the second (and almost final) step. The letter "e" has been dropped because it meant "Europe". The mm is a right-hand drive, pre-production prototype of the next generation Micra that will be introduced in the Japanese market February next year.
The mm-e was 3-door and its plastic body was built over the extended platform of the current Micra. Now the mm is a 3-door metal-bodied prototype based on the new platform being developed jointly with Renault. Except for the number of doors, the design is almost same as the mm-e. It has a strong character yet looks friendly....yes, as friendly as the current Micra. One of Nissan's design principles, guided by Mr. Shiro Nakamura, Vice-President for Design, is 'Consistency'.
The engine is a newly developed inline-4. Although Nissan has not announced its displacement, it is expected to be a bit bigger than the current Micra's powerplant to compete with Toyota's popular Yaris.
