Renault Megane
by Nick Hull

Based on a completely new platform, Megane 2 stands out as a fresh and distinctive design in the mass market C-Segment in Europe. The design is clearly reminiscent of the Avantime and Vel Satis, particularly at the rear, but the front view represents a more orthodox approach compared to these larger flagship models in order to suit a much wider customer taste.

“The understated dimensions of the boot, the subtle yet clearly affirmed shoulders, the rounded, flush-fitting wheel arches... all these elements come together to form a compact whole that smacks of agility and control” says Patrick le Quement, Senior Vice President of Renault Corporate Design.

Megane 2 is equipped with many innovations introduced in the larger Laguna two years ago. These include a choice of two Carminat navigation systems, keyless entry and keyless start using Renault Card, a double glass sunroof, rain and light level sensors and side curtain airbags. Safety is underscored by the provision of a total of 8 airbags in the five door Hatch model and no less than 10 in the three door Sport Hatch.

Megane 2 aims to offer several family-friendly MPV features into a mainstream C-Segment hatchback. The double floor construction offers a new underfloor storage cubby in the front footwells, as pioneered on the successful Megane Scenic model. A total of 44 litres of interior stowage is provided.
