The doors to the 2001 North American International Auto Show have closed for another year. With a wide range of new concept and production car introductions, Detroit has demonstrated once again that it is the car capital of the world. From the scuffles that broke out around the Hummer stand, to the steam rising from Woodward Avenue's manhole covers, to the gospel choir at Ford's introduction of the 'Forty-Nine' concept car, you know this is Detroit!
This year's show seemed to be accompanied by some pessimism as North American market demand weakens. Despite the doom and gloom, 2000 was still a great year for most. The stands were bristling with flashy new concept models as well as new production cars and trucks. There were the sports cars and roadsters that spanned from retro to experimental. And SUV crossovers with the plenty of sporting pretensions seemed to capture the attention of a number of luxury marques. There was even a concept minivan and a dune buggy!
In this section, Car Design News has photo reports from the show floor and as always, we photograph and write as designers, for designers. Choose from the menu on the right, or continue to the show Highlights
In addition to the Highlights stories and photo gallery , we also offer a CD ROM with a comprehensive, higher resolution collection of all the images including show stands, interiors, and design details. More info...
Car Design News will soon be offering a 'premium' subscription service for automotive manufacturers and design professionals in addition to the content and quality you've become accustomed to. This service is designed to provide the auto show experience without having to go there. In fact, it is our mission to show you more of an auto show than you would actually see by walking around the show floor.
Registered users will soon have access to our high resolution image collection and other premium services. For more information and pricing, please email info@cardesignnews.com
