Sep 1, 2000 - Nissan’s compact 4x4 concept car will make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show 2000. Called X-TRAIL, the new concept is recognition of the need to give customers real off-road ability combined with first-class on-road handling and performance. It is a concept designed to contribute to the fun of active people.

The new Nissan X-TRAIL is a showcase for Nissan’s advanced technology, debuting a class-leading 4x4 system, safety features including ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) with traction control and a new 2.0-litre petrol engine in a compact body designed for exceptional on-road refinement.

"The X-TRAIL concept is Nissan’s answer to the challenge of matching excellent road holding and driving enjoyment with good off-road ability," said Mr Tetsuo Shimizu, Chief Product Specialist and project leader of X-TRAIL development.

The Nissan X-TRAIL concept introduces a new 4x4 system employing drive-by-wire technology to provide outstanding driver control in slippery conditions. X-TRAIL’s system instantly reacts to the driver accelerating by anticipating the possibility of loss of traction ensuring all four wheels provide grip as soon as it is needed.

X-TRAIL brings Nissan's technology and innovative design into one vision of future compact 4x4 concept.

Inside X-TRAIL the look is of refreshing, modern materials. To underline the youthful style new types of textured durable materials are used together with formed aluminium for detailed features. Rugged material replaces traditional carpet in the cargo area, allowing the loadspace to be washed clean after exploiting the vehicle’s utility role. Carrying long wide loads like several snowboards is easy, as the centre armrest is removable to allow the boards to rest between the rear seats.
