Graduating students at Britain's Coventry University School of Art and Design have recently shown their work in the annual Design Degree Show. The school has a long history in transport design education, with a large number of graduates employed in the design industry in Europe.

The Design Degree show, this year entitled "Assembly Required", included work from the Transport Design, Consumer Product Design, Graphic Design, Communication Authoring and Design, Industrial Product Design and Automotive Engineering Design courses.

The school is one of the largest in Europe, so it was a challenge to see all of the work by the Transport Design students, which included the MDes and BA graduates.

A four seater Aston Martin concept by Chloe Edwards and a Jaguar 'Modern British Luxury' concept by Anthony Bushell showed new approaches to classic British brands, with an emphasis on proportion and execution, together with bold and innovative surface development.

A recreational Renault roadster by Peter Blades-Nixon pushed the avant-garde envelope, with influences from architecture and leisure-boat design, and the 'Philips' vehicle by Mark Stubbs showed a unique solution to the application of a non-automotive brand in vehicle design.

The school has a strong relationship with the nearby automotive design studios of Jaguar, Aston Martin, Lotus and Bentley, as well as a number of smaller design and prototyping studios. Students benefit from placements at these studios, which are an essential part of the course structure. Other companies providing opportunities for internships include Volkswagen, Ford, Citroen, Nissan, Arup Design Research, DAF, Alias|Wavefront, Design Q, AKA, Honda Europe, Seymour Powell, and TVR, just to name a few.

For the last 25 years, the BA (Hons) degree in Transport Design has been a unique undergraduate course in Britain, with a large number of graduates employed in the automotive design industry directly after graduation.

The course has recently been redesigned, and now provides Britain's first undergraduate Masters design course - 'Mdes in Transport Design' - which runs alongside the existing BA (Hons) course.
