Opel coupe   Ji Won Kim

The discontinuation of the Camaro and Firebird has opened a major segment in the sports car lineup for General Motors. Remodeling a Camaro or Firebird on outdated platforms would have negative perceptions on new consumers who are more sensitive and aware of new technologies and trends.

Kim’s image car for Opel for the year 2010 will signal the new design and direction for Opel and would be a great opportunity for GM to introduce a brand new category of sports cars in the American market, without competing with the heritage of American muscle cars.

BMW M4   Bob Mochizuki

Bob Mochizuki designed a new BMW M4 for the year 2008. This BMW will fill the line up gap between the M3 and M5. This new M4 is a strong emotionally unique vehicle. It’s a two seater with classic proportions and new dynamic curves and fenders, keeping with the current and past BMW design themes. Mochizuki’s design is a more pure 'M', an ultimate driving machine. The design is based on the current M3 platform with a V8 engine.

Lotus Esteem Chan Park

The goal of Chan Park was to create a next generation Lotus Esprit. However through research and history of Lotus, Park felt that a new design and name was appropriate thus he developed the Lotus Esteem.

The Esteem would be a true V8 Lotus to compete with the other line of super cars like Ferrari’s and Aston Martins. Parks design reflects the Lotus spirit, through its lightweight and agility. The body reflects the Lotus’s designed today and gives the feeling of lightness. The wedge theme was to reflect direction and speed.

Audi A4 for 2008   Ray Huang

To find the next step for sporty sedans, Ray Huang designed an Audi A4 for the year 2008. Given the cars sporty proportions he designed a 2-1/2 box with a long green house, 5 doors, short overhangs, and a short tail. This car will further establish Audi as a sporty marque and differentiate Audi from VW. The B pillar is exposed to increase the safety and structure of the car. This new A4 is shorter then the current A4, but has the same interior space as the current A6.

While the student's projects were largely developed using traditional methodology, taking 2D sketches and drawings to an orthographic 1/5 or 1/4 scale tape drawing, from which a clay model is generated, painted and detailed, the digital process seems to gain more and more appreciation. In several cases, sketches and concept drawings were generated with the help of computer-based applications like StudioPaint and Photoshop. The tape drawing is executed with the help of Adobe Illustrator and the model built and rendered in CAID packages such as Alias|wavefront AutoStudio.

Increasingly models are physically generated from 3D data using the school's rapid prototyping facility, which allows the students to have their models milled out using the 5-axis CNC mill. This offers an interesting and promising alternative to traditional model making, which is why this methodology is being strongly implemented in the school's curriculum.

Art Center, one of the world's premier art and design colleges since its founding in 1930, offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Science degree for: Advertising; Film; Fine Art; Graphic Design and Packaging; Illustration; Industrial Design, including Transportation, Product and Environmental Design; and Photography. A graduate program leads to a Master of Fine Arts or Master of Science degree.

The school also offers Saturday High for high school students; extension classes for adults through Art Center at Night in Pasadena, Orange County, San Francisco, and New York; Art Center for Kids for grades four through eight; and a Summer Design Institute for Teachers in conjunction with the Smithsonian and Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Pritzker Prize-winning architects Frank Gehry and Alvaro Siza have recently been selected to design Art Center’s new educational facilities for the 21st century.

Art Center has three graduating Senior Shows each year. The next graduation shows will be Friday August 15, and Friday, December 12, 2002.
