July 21, 2003 - Transportation Design students at Korea's Hongik University displayed their work in the annual degree show in November 2002. The theme of the degree show was 'Personal Vehicles for Personal Usage'.

Within this theme the students presented a wide range of vehicle types and brands. The opening of the degree show was accompanied by the 'Professional Day', which is to become an annual event, attended by students, teachers and professional designers from Hyundai, Kia, Renault-Samsung, GM-Daewoo, and Johnson Controls. This ceremony aims to bring together leading industrial design directors and new promising designers.

The projects by the graduating diploma students included:

Cruise
Chungha Kim

In the 21st century, cars are no longer just transportation, but are becoming more of a tool for leisure. Cruise focuses on the leisure factors of cars and optimum openness is achieved through an air-shield which replaces the conventional windshield. The body structure is separated into frame and deck, which are fixed with magnetic power. Through this, replacing the deck part allows the drivers to create a range of styles to suit their taste.

Tuxedo
Lee Hoseung

This is a SUV for people in the 'Silver Age'. Their unique demands for purchasing power of the Silver age and its long-term existence will definitely increase. This vehicle is a 'high end' product for the senior citizens who have been working hard for society. The vehicle theme is inspired by the 1914 Chevrolet and improvised in the way of aesthetic and formative art. By putting the instrument panel outside of the vehicle, it has obtained greater space inside. It has a mid-ship engine and luggage space is moved forward. Tuxedo is a high-class and dignified SUV for 2 persons.

These days, a scooter is no longer a lower notion of automobile. For the young generation, with economical speed and easy drivability, it is making another domain against automobiles, and is seen as being developed to include the function of a small, compact car. The scooter can now be expected to play a role as a fashion item beyond being a transportation tool. Therefore, we suggest a scooter which can make a new life style.

With the current trend towards smaller families, vehicle categories and their usage are changing. Therefore, the present four/five passenger capacity SUV are expected to tend towards three passenger vehicles. EX2 was designed as a concept for a second car for people in their 30s-40s.

Maniac
Sangsik Hong

'Maniac' is designed for the 'F1 buff' who really likes the shape of formula cars and enjoys the thrill of speed and extreme cornering. 'Maniac' shows the motion of the suspension to the driver in dynamic driving.
