Alias|Wavefront, Toronto-based developers of industry leading automotive design software, recently held it's 3December™ event. This new annual event is designed to build a community amongst 3D professionals and those with a strong interest in 3D computer graphics all over the world.

Over 20,000 artists and designers from the fields of industrial design, film and video, computer games, and interactive and visualization sectors participated at fifty regional 3December events around the world, over a single day. A day long webcast kicked off with 3December events in the Pan-Pacific region, move through Asia and Europe and finished 24 hours later on the West Coast of America.

The Detroit event, at their Royal Oak offices, included presentations by IAS Design (formerly Motor City Surf Club), General Motors Design, games developers, and rapid prototyping specialists.

IAS is a consulting firm in the Detroit area that uses StudioTools® and Maya™ for design and animation. They've been customers of Alias|Wavefront for a number of years and were formerly known as Motor City Surf Club. Owen Resh and Pete Peterson demonstrated the workflows used in the development of a race-winning off-road racing body, developed completely digitally using Studio Tools software.

Kathy Engelhart from General Motors Design explained the digital development process at GM, and showed the way the studios are moving to incorporate fully digital workflows, including virtual reality evaluation.

Event participants were able to take part in hands-on tutorials in Maya and Studio Tools software, and to interact with the Portfolio Wall, a new Alias|Wavefront product for improving the way design studios interact with their digital models and images. One of the disadvantages of new digital workflows has been the lack of a physical model that you can walk around, and 'live with' every minute of the day, to really become familiar with all aspects of the design. The Portfolio Wall attempts to address this, to get the digital work 'out of the box' and within easy reach of everyone involved in the design process.

The Portfolio Wall allows easy access to sketches, animations and even interaction with 3D models, with easy point-and-drag selection. Sketches can be dragged into groups for easy presentation and comparison. A new addition is colored tags which can be used to tag sketches, to group or vote for each proposal.
