Apr 12, 2002 - The Institute of Applied Arts and Design - Turin presents: 'Perspectives in Design', an evening event featuring Syd Mead, on Monday April 15 at the Automobile Museum of Turin.
Syd Mead is a visual futurist designer of international fame, famous for his magnificent illustrations conceived and realized in movies such as Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, and Star Trek. Imagine fantastic but possible worlds, fill them with people and create for them futuristic architectures and vehicles. Syd Mead has become well known to the public, with over thirty years of activity as a visual futurist designer.
It would be enough to mention just one movie to understand the level of his creativity: Blade Runner by director Ridley Scott, whose dark and claustrophobic environment has influenced a whole generation of directors, writers (for example the novel 'Neuromancer' by William Gibson) as well as designers worldwide.
Subjects to be discussed at the event:
- Retrospectives on objects of design that range from transportation to industrial, from exhibit to architecture, to the famous scenography of the science-fiction movies.
- Solutions for the mobility of the future: Presentation of the project 'Hypervan Release 2002', a prototype for a car that works with hydrogen, constructed with composite materials and conceived for a city of the future. Presentation of the 1:18 scale model in aluminium by Polimodel and 3Search design.
- Showing of the short animated 3D computer graphics film trailer 'Colony Race': a joint project between Syd Mead Inc. and partners 3Search Design of Turin. Set in a future world, the film tells the story of a theft during a race of ultra-technology water motorcycles, that represent major corporations using this type of competition to attribute to the winner a political-financial hegemony.
'Colony Race' is a mixture between cinema and design, where the forms and the technologies used belong to the world of cinema, while the content is devoted to exploit the futuristic design and style of yacht, crafts, water motorcycles and interior architecture. 'Colony Race' was produced by: Syd Mead, Stefano Oggeri, Lorenzo Lecce, Gianluca Bertone, Alessandro Pagani, Luigi Conte, Giorgio Pirolo and Mauro Basso.
The project was the first Italian computer graphics animation selected for the Animation Festival at the Siggraph 2001 Computer Graphics Exhibition in Los Angeles. The film won the 'Paolo Zucchi 2001' award in quality of best digital video realized by young designers under 30 years of age.
