December 24, 2002 - Few things date as quickly as yesterdays vision of the future, and in automotive design this is particularly true, as little of the aircraft and rocket inspired show cars from the 1950s or electric micro cars of the early 1970s grace our 21st century streets.
But in the present it is always intriguing to see up and coming designers visions of the future, and despite the implicit extremeness of their designs, many provide direct or indirect stimulus to future production design, as well as developing the individual designers repertoire.
The most common way that a wider audience gets to see advanced, futuristic vehicle design is when a car manufacturer produces a show car or when design students show their projects. But another way is through car design competitions.
Competitions to design cars of the future have been around for almost as long as the car itself, although most have tended to be for non-professional designers. These competitions also tend to err away from reality and are fixed to being for an existing vehicle brand.
Car Design News and Opticore, a leading design software company specialising in advanced systems for the automotive industry, will soon launch the worlds first International Automotive Digital Design Competition, 'Go Digital'.
The Go Digital competition brief will be to create a vehicle design for a non-automotive brand in the form of a digital model, with two categories of entrants: one for professional designers and one for everyone else. Unlike most other competitions, design entries will respond to a brief presented in the form of a lifestyle scenario for a couple living in 2020, which will provide competitors the scope to demonstrate their creative design talents and be a relevant challenge.
Each winner will gain exposure of their work directly to senior members of the design industry, and will have their work featured in an online exhibition. The winners will also receive a package of advanced computer hardware and software worth over $20,000!
As todays automotive industry increasingly uses computer aided design tools in the creative process, so Go Digital aims to demonstrate how vehicle design has evolved to a new form of design with no geographical boundaries or the need for large studios and long development periods.
Competing designers digital models will be submitted to a dedicated 'Go Digital' website, which will display the work of the finalists and winners. A panel of industry judges including Car Design News editorial staff will evaluate the designs and determine a shortlist of finalists, who will develop their designs for final judging by a panel of senior design management from major car companies.
The competition brief will be announced in February, 10 finalists from professional and non-professional designer categories will be selected in May and in August the winners will be chosen from both categories.
