February 17, 2003 - The worlds first automotive digital design competition, Go Digital, starts today with the announcement of its design brief and an impressive list of senior design industry judges.
The competition, run by the design software company Opticore in association with Car Design News, is to design a vehicle for 2020 in the form of a digital model that will be submitted by email. The Go Digital competiton has categories for professional and non-professional designers, and has prizes with a total value of over $300,000.
The lifestyle scenario design brief announced today gives a clear picture of the type of people that the vehicle should be designed to appeal to, and the uses that it will need to suit. It describes the lives of Toby and Julia, a young European couple living with their dog in Gothenburg, Sweden. They have a modern lifestyle that would be typical of 2020 when the scenario is set, having an international background, not planning to have children until their mid-thirties, one of them being a home-worker, both leading varied and independent lives and preferring to own a non-automotive branded car.
This unique, illustrated 'lifestyle scenario' design brief aims to give Go Digital participants a rich source of inspiration and reference when creating their automotive digital design models, and direct them towards innovative yet realistic vehicle designs for the future.
Comparing the merits of each design will be eased with all participants following the same brief, and the competition having a specific set of published assessment criteria. Additionally, the Go Digital judges have a wealth of experience in evaluating design work.
The list of senior design industry management who will judge Go Digital finalists designs, announced today for the first time, includes:
- Peter Horbury, Executive Director of Design, Ford Motor Company Premier Automotive Group (comprising Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo).
- Michael Mauer, Executive Director of Design, Saab.
- Martin Smith, Director of Design, Opel.
- Dick Ruzzin, former Director of Design for Chevrolet , Cadillac and GM Europe, and Founder of the 'Eyes on Design/Detroit' awards.
- Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO of Polyphony Inc., Sony Computer Entertainment, Producer of Gran Turismo for PlayStation.
- Freeman Thomas, Vice President of Advanced Design, Daimler Chrysler.
With todays announcement of the design brief, participants can now start their design work and will have nearly three months to develop their concepts before the deadline for initial submission on the 5th May. The announcement today of the Go Digital judges gives professional and non-professional designers a unique incentive of their work being seen by six senior design industry managers as well as the possibility of taking home some substantial prizes.
