February 25, 2003 - September 2002 saw the launch of the 2nd Peugeot Design Contest, inviting design enthusiasts to submit entries on the theme of 'Retrofuturism'. Nearly 2,800 projects from 90 countries were registered on the contest website.

In December, a list of 50 projects was submitted to the public and journalists to vote on. The vote narrowed the list down to a shortlist of 10 entries and the Peugeot jury selected Stefan Schulze's entry, 'Peugeot 4002'.

Taking his inspiration from the legendary 402, the 32-year old German graphic designer created a sporty, streamlined coupé with its sights resolutely set to the future.

The design of the 'Lion' is generally based on the Peugeot 402 of 1938. The vehicle is a super sports car which appeares futuristic but also comprises retro design elements. The most important element is the imposing chrome radiator grill which runs over the roof to the rear and ends in a similar form to the front. The chrome grill includes the typical double headlights as on the Peugeot 402. The lights follow the angle of the tyres, to illuminates the curves.

The windscreen has a central chrome trim strip so that it seems to be separated. The wheels are designed in accordance to it's predecessor, with prominent hubcaps, and white rings on the tyres additionally underline the retro look. The two-coloured paint scheme contributes to the retro design as well. Fenders and rocker are kept dark, while doors and side frames are bright. The dark engine hood and the dark roof from the 402 are replaced with the windscreen which reaches, as separated elements, down to the rear.

The 'Lion' abandons extreme wing and spoiler combinations. A large hidden spoiler under the car has it's intake in the grille and outlet in the grille-like rear opening. The huge air intake ducts in front of the rear wheels use vertical strips for a refined and unobtrusive appearance.

The naming 'Lion' not only refers to the Peugeot with the Lion logo, but also to the similarity between the shape of the car and a lion itself. The wide front mimics the head and the mane of a lion which slims to the rear. Like a resting Lion, the design seeks to project strength, force, sovereignty and calmness.

Stefan will recieve the “La Griffe” trophy at a presentation at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Peugeot will once again construct a life-size model of the winning project, and will present it at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show.
