March 31, 2003 - Spring has finally arrived in Umeå in northern Sweden, the location of Scandinavia's only Transportation Design degree program. The sun is shining, the snow is melting and the students are preparing for the annual Degree Show. There are thirty graduating students in total, eight of whom are from the Masters course in Transportation Design.
Transportation Design is one of three MA courses offered at the Umeå Institute of Design - the others are Advanced Product Design and Interaction Design. The two-year MA course currently has 18 students - 10 in the first year, eight in the second year. Students must have a first degree in industrial design or equivalent to be considered for the course.
The Institute of Design is housed in a converted power station and purpose built premises on the banks of the Umeå River. The school has an atmosphere which is open and light, and each student has their own personal workspace within this environment. Well-equipped workshops exist for woodwork, metal, plastic, clay modelling, assembly and painting. The college also provides students with state of the art technology for rapid prototyping and milling from CAD files.
The course has a highly international focus. The ratio of students on the current course is almost 50:50 between Scandinavian and international students who come from countries as far apart as Brazil, China, Korea, Vietnam, USA and the UK.
This will be the first graduating class to have had the instruction and guidance of Anders Gunnarson, the new leader of the Transportation Design program. A well known professional from the car industry, Anders has been working at Volvo Cars for the past 12 years. He is Chief Designer at the Volvo Strategic Studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, and has also worked in the Volvo Design Studio in Barcelona.
Anders has had a prolific career at Volvo and has taken part in the development of the Volvo 850 luxury sedan through the entire design and production process. He was also responsible for the development of concept cars like the Volvo ACC, displayed at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show. Personally he sees his work on the exterior design of Volvo C70 as his major achievement. Presently Anders is working with strategic design, corporate Identity and future Identity and new and emerging production technologies at Volvo and is instrumental to building Volvo's current and future design philosophy.
The Degree Show in Umeå runs from Saturday 7th to Friday 13th June. The exhibition then transfers to the Volvo Show Room in Stockholm and is open from Wednesday 18th to Sunday 29th June.
