May 28, 2003 - Final year students from the Coventry University Transport Design course are preparing for their annual degree exhibition. Britains largest and oldest undergraduate transport design course will present 92 students as part of Coventry Universitys show: 'The Exhibitionists'. The show also includes work from 19 product designers who study in tandem with the transport designers.
The show marks the culmination of 3 or 4 years of study, depending on whether the BAHons or MDes study routes have been followed. The BAHons students exhibit both their self select and group projects, whilst those finishing the MDes display answers to their individually chosen research questions.
The projects on show, and the students themselves are diverse in nature and approach, resulting in surprising and thought provoking results. The graduating year comprises students from 10 different countries and this contributes to a wide variety of work on display.
The design concepts exhibited explore ideas for future mobility, including: a traditional sports/luxury car for Lincoln, a barrier breaking entry level yacht, a national identity vehicle for Isuzu, Bentley Rediscovered, a track day car for Nike, a city car designed with intimacy in mind, a car for the individual inspired by the Diesel brand, a Lotus influenced by the philosophies of sculpture, a Tuktuk for London, a contemporary interpretation of the traditional hot rod, a 21st century custom motorbike and a Bentley powerboat. These are just some of the projects to be presented at this years undergraduate show.
The models, drawings, and computer assisted presentations demonstrate the design process. Each student will be presenting their individual journey from the initial research question, through the exploration of the issue and initial concept ideas to the finished design proposal.
Coventry University has been running its Transport Design course for thirty years and has an impressive employment record. Almost every automotive design studio employs a Coventry University graduate. The course continues to be supported by several major automotive manufacturers and this allows the students a greater understanding of the professional design process.
Admission to the show is free and runs from Saturday 14 June to Wednesday 18 June 10am-6pm daily, whilst the Private Views are on Thursday 12 June and Friday 13 June until from 6-9pm, by invitation only.
