Dec 19, 2001 - Japan's Design Club International Inc. has announced that Ken Okuyama will become a member of DCI as director, effective December 2001. Okuyama is Transportation Department Chair at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
According to DCI President Yasuhiko Matsuoka: "Design Club International has benefited from Ken Okuyama's cooperation and support over many years, so after he took up his new post at Art Center, both sides saw the opportunity for even closer cooperation in the future."
In addition to his educational activities, Okuyama will contribute his own designs to DCI projects and will participate in design direction and management. He will also be involved in sales and promotion for DCI, particularly outside Japan.
Design Club International will also act as Okuyama's agent for his own projects, providing business and design-related support where necessary.
A graduate of Tokyo's Musashino Art University and subsequently Art Center College of Design, from which he graduated in 1986, Ken Okuyama is well known and respected throughout the world of automotive design.
Okuyama has worked in the design studios of General Motors and Porsche, and more recently was Assistant Director of Design at Pininfarina S.p.A. His experience and influential role as a designer and teacher in the United States and Europe made him the natural choice for the appointment at Art Center, which he took up earlier this year.
Art Center College of Design has held a leading position in the education of the world's automotive designers since its founding in 1930. Alumni include the senior design executives of many of the world's car companies, so the attention of the entire industry is focused on Okuyama's role as only the fourth chairman of the school's Transportation Design department.
Design Club International is one of Japan's leading combined automotive and industrial design consultancies, with headquarters in the Fuji-Hakone National Park.
